Breakaway is a beautiful second chance sports story--so simple and real--yet sexy, passionate, and romantic. I love the way in which A.M. Johnson explores the state of vulnerability that past failed relationships left both Mark and Stevie in. These two are an amazing and fantastic couple who exhibit such remarkable depth and breadth. They first met each other at a time in their lives where they couldn't, or wouldn't pursue anything more than a passing friendship--no matter how strong the attraction between them. That didn't mean that either of them were ever too far from each others' minds. When Mark and Stevie see each other again a year later, the chemistry is even hotter than before, and the emotional connection is stronger than ever.
I could feel how Mark was immediately drawn to Stevie the moment he laid eyes upon her. She wasn't like other women who constantly vied for his attention as an elite hockey star, and to him, that was refreshing. Stevie found that with Mark, she could be herself, not who she thought she had to be. "You know who are Stevie. You've just been hiding too long to remember." I was pleased that Mark was able to see the "real" Stevie--a smart, passionate, funny, curvy, sexy woman.
I love the way A.M. Johnson uses words. By definition, words are a "unit of language consisting of one or more spoken sounds or their written representation, that functions as a principal carrier of meaning." With every creatively constructed word A.M. writes, comes powerful emotions and feelings that leap the from the pages. Whether it's anger, or hurt at the way Stevie's ex-husband made her feel messy and insecure or the strong desire Mark has for Stevie, you feel every one of these special moments.
In Breakaway, there are so many of those "special moments" where I was left breathless and swooning. There is no way I could list them because I'd practically be quoting the entire book! Seriously though, A.M. Johnson's words came together to tell the most beautiful story. Readers will feel deeply and emotionally connected to this couple. I, personally, will simply adore Mark and Stevie forever.
